Frequently Asked Questions

Will my flight be cancelled during a typhoon?

Most likely yes, especially for direct hits. Airlines typically cancel flights 12-24 hours before a typhoon. Check with your airline early and consider changing your flight proactively. Travel insurance that covers typhoons is highly recommended.

Is it safe to stay in my hotel during a typhoon?

Yes. Okinawa's buildings, especially hotels, are built with reinforced concrete designed to withstand typhoons. Stay in your room, away from windows, and follow hotel staff instructions.

How long does a typhoon typically last in Okinawa?

A typhoon usually affects Okinawa for 1-2 days. The intense period with strong winds typically lasts 6-12 hours. However, transport disruptions may continue for an additional day after the storm passes.

Should I cancel my trip if a typhoon is forecast?

Not necessarily. Forecasts can change, and typhoons may shift course. If a typhoon is 5+ days away, wait and monitor. If it is 2-3 days away and heading directly for Okinawa, consider adjusting plans. Always have travel insurance.
