Drinking in Okinawa? Use Daiko!

After enjoying Okinawa's nightlife, getting home safely is the most important thing. Japan has extremely strict DUI laws — tourists are NOT exempt. Use a daiko (designated driver) service and get home safely with your car.

Japan's DUI Penalties

Japan enforces some of the strictest DUI penalties in the world. Even a small amount of alcohol can put you over the legal limit.

Driving While Intoxicated

Up to 5 years in prison or ¥1,000,000 fine. License revoked (3 years).

Driving Under the Influence

Up to 3 years in prison or ¥500,000 fine. License suspended 90 days to revoked.

* Passengers and anyone who provides a vehicle can also be penalized. One beer may exceed the legal limit.

How to Call a Daiko (3 Steps)

1

Call to Reserve

Before leaving the restaurant, call a daiko operator. Tell them the restaurant name/address and your destination. Search for numbers on our directory.

2

Wait for Pickup

They usually arrive in 10-30 minutes. Wait in front of the restaurant. On busy nights, call early.

3

Ride & Pay

Get in your car and pay when you arrive home. Cash is standard, but some operators accept credit cards.

Tips for Tourists & Rental Car Users

  • Daiko works with rental cars! This is very common in Okinawa.
  • Save a few daiko phone numbers before going out drinking.
  • Friday nights and year-end are busy. Call early to avoid long waits.
  • Near Kokusai Street in Naha, many operators are available and arrive quickly.
  • Daiko is available on remote islands (Miyakojima, Ishigaki) too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can tourists use daiko services?
Yes! Daiko works for anyone with a car. Rental cars are no problem — just tell them "rental car" when you call.
Do I need to speak Japanese?
Basic Japanese works. Just say the restaurant name and your hotel/destination. You can also call directly from our website.
Is daiko cheaper than a taxi?
For short distances, taxis may be cheaper. But when you factor in going back to get your car the next day, daiko is usually the better deal.
Can I get a daiko late at night?
Most operators run until 3-4 AM. Some offer 24-hour service. Early morning hours may have a surcharge.
