Health Insurance Guide
Understanding how medical insurance works in Japan will help you get the right care without worrying about costs.
Japan's National Health Insurance (NHI)
Japan's NHI covers 70% of medical costs for residents. Tourists on short stays are NOT eligible for NHI. You must have travel insurance or pay full price.
Travel Insurance
Most major hospitals accept international travel insurance. The typical process: pay at the hospital, get receipts and documents, then submit a claim to your insurance company after returning home.
Cost Without Insurance
Without insurance, expect to pay full price. A typical clinic visit costs ¥5,000-15,000. Emergency room visits can cost ¥30,000-100,000+. Always bring cash.
| Service | Estimated Cost (JPY) |

| Emergency room | ¥30,000 - ¥100,000+ |
| X-ray / CT scan | ¥10,000 - ¥50,000 |
| Prescription (per item) | ¥500 - ¥5,000 |
